Help People Give Money Away

Posted by in Accounting, Auditing & Tax

You’ve spent your career in finance trying to help people make money. Have you ever considered a job where you could help them give it away instead? Non-profit organizations, big and small, are always on the lookout for talented donor relations representatives. Employees who excel in the field have strong interpersonal skills, fiscal financial knowledge, and a passion for their purpose. Do you have what it takes to bring in big bucks for a good cause?

People who donate a sizable sum to a charity are flagged as “Major Donors” and assigned to a team member as a point of contact. The major donor rep follows up with them and periodically updates them on the progress of the projects they have helped fund. Representatives are available to receive additional donations and when necessary, campaign for contributions.

On top of individual attention, reps organize and attend fundraising events and other charitable functions. There is a need to be able to interact comfortably with wealthy constituents which makes people with previous finance job experience exceptional candidates for this sort of position. They are also well suited for it because they have intricate knowledge of financial concerns, money management, and tax rules as well as deductions. Coming from a background that makes money gives credibility to your plea to have someone pledge money.

No matter how good you are with people or how well you crunch numbers though, without a passion for the cause you choose you are going to fail miserably. You can’t work for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) during the week and then go hunting on the weekend. It just doesn’t work like that. Likewise you can’t work for Operation Smile if the site of cleft lip surgeries churns your stomach. Find a cause you believe in and you will surely find an organization that needs help raising funds.

Working for a non-profit organization can be a life changing experience. It’s fulfilling to see the fruits of your labor put into action to effect a change in the lives of others, both givers and receivers.
