Title: Vehicle Systems Technician Location: Virginia-Wallops Island
The Vehicle Systems Mechanic performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility of planning and conducting a complete project involving the transporting, assembly, check out and launch of various rocket systems. He/She will perform one or more of the duties listed and may train or be assisted by lower level technicians. This is a non-exempt position and is represented by the IAM&AW. 1. Assigned responsibility of performing inspection, assembly, testing, check out, and launch of various rocket vehicle systems and subsystems. 2. Coordinates and performs safe launch vehicle and pad operations prior to and during countdowns. 3. Operates, maintains, and modifies GFE and launch complex equipment at WFF and other launch sites within and outside of the continental limits of the United States. 4. Transports rocket motors and explosives over roads and highways. 5. Assembles, modifies, and alters igniters and electro-explosive devices according to written specifications. 6. Uses polymers and thermosetting plastics in making modifications and repairs. 7. Inspects for conformance to specifications of all types of rocket vehicle components, i.e., motors, igniters, electro-explosives devices, hardware, and electrical systems. 8. Performs check out of vehicle hardware and systems to meet flight requirements, and installs vehicle components (i.e., fins, adapters, electrical harnesses, nozzles, igniters, etc.) to make up complete stages. 9. Coordinates and conducts final launch preparation, check out, and launching in a safe and timely manner. 10. Performs or assists in the static firing of solid propellant rocket motors and electro-explosive devices. 11. Acts as Pad Supervisor on specific launches at WFF and off-range launch sites, interfacing with scientist/engineers and enforcing appropriate safety regulations. 12. Assists in conducting annual Pyrotechnic Grounding surveys.
Basic Qualifications:
AA in Electronic or Mechanical Technology or equivalent military/trade school training and a minimum of 8 years of general experience, 6 of which have been as an electronic technician or a total of 10 years of general electronic experience. Knowledge required to perform inspection, assembly, testing, checkout, and preparation for launch of various rocket vehicle systems and subsystems. Knowledge of and ability to apply specifications pertaining to all types of rocket vehicle components such as motors, igniters, electro-explosive devices, hardware, and electrical systems. Must possess or will be required to obtain Certification/Licensing for Electrostatic Discharge (NHB 5300.4 3L); Hazardous Materials Handlers Certification; High Pressure (above 150 psig) Liquid/Vapor/Gas System Operations; Ordnance/Pyrotechnics Certification Categories 1, 2, & 3; Safety Certifications; and X-Ray.
