Title: Vehicle Systems Technician II Location: Virginia-Wallops Island
The Vehicle Systems Mechanic II performs non-routine assignments required to support a complete mission project involving the transporting, assembly, check out and launch of various rocket vehicle systems. He/She will perform one or more of the duties listed and may be assisted or directed by a senior Vehicle System Mechanic for ordnance type duties. This is a non-exempt position and is represented by the IAM&AW. Duties: 1. Assists in the inspection, assembly, testing, and check out, and shipping of various rocket motors, igniters, and electro-explosive devices according to written procedures and under the direction of ordnance certified technician. 2. Assists in the inspection, acceptance, assembly, testing, and checkout of all vehicle inert hardware such as fins, tailcans, interstages, launch lugs, adapters, electro-mechanical devices, etc.) 3. Performs safe launch vehicle and pad operations prior to and during countdowns under the direction of the launch pad supervisor. 4. Assists in the maintenance, inspection, acceptance, testing and checkout of launch support equipment, including launchers, at WFF and other launch sites within and outside of the continental limits of the United States. 5. Responsible for tracking, calibration, and availability of vehicle systems support equipment such as tools, meters, check-out boxes, etc. 6. Uses polymers and thermosetting plastics in making modifications and repairs. 7. Inspects for conformance to specifications of all types of rocket vehicle components, i.e., motors, igniters, electro-explosives devices, hardware, and electrical systems. 8. Assists in the check out of vehicle hardware and systems to meet flight requirements, and installs vehicle components (i.e., fins, adapters, electrical harnesses, nozzles, igniters, etc.) to make up complete stages. 9. Assists in final launch preparation, check out, and launching in a safe and timely manner. 10. Assists in the static firing of solid propellant rocket motors and electro-explosive devices. 11. Assists in conducting annual Pyrotechnic Grounding surveys Basic Qualifications:
Trade school or military training and a minimum of 2 years of general experience, 1 of which have been as an electronic or mechanical technician or a total of 4 years of general electro-mechanical experience. Knowledge of and ability to apply specifications pertaining to rocket vehicle inert components such as fins, tailcans, interstages, electro-mechanical systems. Knowledge of and ability to perform maintenance and acceptance tests of sounding rocket launchers and other ground support equipment. Must possess or will be required to obtain Certification/Licensing for Electrostatic Discharge (NHB 5300.4 3L); Hazardous Materials Handlers Certification; High Pressure (above 150 psig) Liquid/Vapor/Gas; Ordnance/Pyrotechnics Certification Category 2. Frequent travel for extended duration may be required.
