Job Description: The successful candidate will provide technical expertise in sonar transducers, hydrophones, interconnecting cables, and specialty molded products/systems used on Navy surface (DDG & CG Class) ship and in other military applications. Technical expertise is required in Fleet support, installation, maintenance, testing and installation training for sonar transducers, hydrophones, and cabling systems. Further expertise in the capabilities of shipyard facilities, transducer repair facilities, and shipboard facilities is also desired. The incumbent will perform duties related to Fleet support on testing and transducer installation, and some minor failure analysis on Fleet returned items and technical support to support projects within the Branch.
Will provide technical consultation and "hands-on" assistance to technicians and ship yard personnel in the areas of installation maintenance, testing, trouble shooting, of sonar and cabling equipment. Responsible for the review and interpretation of drawings, specifications, procedures, and other technical documentation. Will perform electrical and mechanical tests on assemblies and subassemblies to assure that they are compatible with sonar systems into which they will be installed. Will perform failure analysis on assemblies and subassemblies which have failed in the field or during testing. This includes set up and operation of specialized test equipment and recording data as required.
Will provide technical management for fleet support related to DOP Production tasks. Interfaces with Fleet and shipyards, customers, engineers, quality assurance specialists, other technicians, and other support personnel to provide DOP project support.
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this work is to provide technical expertise for assuring quality, uniformity, and reliability of surface ship transducers and hydrophones, their subsystems, and test equipment. Work efforts affect a wide variety of NAVY projects and other important projects and programs. The incumbent must achieve positive results through professional action/reaction in very high stress situations including mobilization if it occurs and positively influence the action of others based on the incumbent's experience of Fleet support requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires some walking, lifting, carrying, and bending aboard ships; required to perform component inspection and installation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Most work is performed in assembly and laboratory test areas and at various Naval shipyards and test facilities. Some work will be in ship sonar domes. Travel is expected to be at least 50% of time to Navy activities, Navy/Contractor Shipyards and test facilities.
