Senior Manufacturing Engineer Country United States Work Location NJ, Clifton Job Description Applies advanced engineering to develop the optimal approach to the solution of highly complex problems in the Geospatial Systems Operations business unit. Ensures quality completion of the resulting engineering tasks either as an individual contributor and/or as the leader of a project team. Works under consultative direction and assumes primary engineering responsibility for manufacturing processes. The engineer is a recognized expert and authority in their field of technology, and as such identifies and pursues courses of action essential to obtaining desired outcomes. He/she works on unusually complex problems and provides solutions that are highly creative. Uses independent judgment to accomplish objectives within defined policies and procedures. Provides advanced engineering expertise in support of the design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and/or test of highly complex electronic assemblies for space application. Technical expertise should include a broad background in the electro-mechanical manufacturing with a strong concentration in surface mount technology/processes for circuit card assembly in a NASA 8739/J-Std-001DS environment. Demonstrated process expertise shall include: Component Lead Forming, Solder Paste Stencil Printing, Pick & Place, Vapor Phase Solder Reflow, Aqueous Cleaning Systems, and Automated Conformal Coating. Additional expertise in Design for Manufacturing, SPC, design and fabrication of test/support fixtures, vacuum lamination, cable/harness assembly and automated cable testing. Tasks may include: creation of manufacturing instructions and/or test plans, data analysis, development/installation of production methods and processes, preparation of estimates for bids and proposals, development of plant and facility layouts, etc. Emphasis is on leadership and coordination of such activities which encompass the development and implementation of the overall strategic technical direction of Operations as well as program execution. Requires the application of engineering standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in ways that are highly innovative and ingenious. Work encompasses a wide range of sophisticated (cross-discipline) engineering problem resolutions. Scope is focused on taking a leadership role in highly pressurized situations when there is a need to achieve results, on developing best practices, and on mentoring others to higher proficiency levels .Leads and directs such activities as design and evaluation of tools, jigs and fixtures and development and installation of production methods and processes. .Leads teams charged with Investigating, analyzing, and solving technical problems of significant complexity. .Maintains all required documentation in department approved repository for work products in accordance with established policy and procedures. .Maintains technical competence and state-of-the-art expertise in areas of technical specialization. .Prepares and provides technical data as required by the assigned tasks. .Performs special assignments as requested. May be required to perform assignments which are normally related to the work of higher or lower classifications. .Develops and implements test procedures while selecting appropriate test instrumentation as required by an assigned task. .Leads and directs teams to determine the manufacturability (FAI&T) of new technologies. May function as organization spokesperson on advanced projects or programs as the engineering expert or authority. .Communicates the technology (including its application and benefits) and project status/results accurately and concisely to a wide audience, including customers and senior management, through conversations, presentations, and written documentation.. .Develops production methods and prepares written production processes and procedures which instruct production personnel in implementation and application of processes as required. Prepares changes to the production process based on Engineering Change Notices. .Evaluates/analyzes manufacturing processes and makes recommendations for changes necessary for economical and efficient FAI&T. .Prepares specifications and layouts for floor space, work areas, tooling and facilities and may coordinate final layout plans for approval. .Prepares estimates of tooling requirements and of fabrication, assembly, integration, test, and other manufacturing labor content by analyzing blueprints, models, sketches, or engineering descriptions. .Investigates problem areas and initiates corrective measures relating to the interpretation of technical data and the functioning of equipment during prototype construction or manufacturing phases and field installation. .Leads and directs the preparation of estimates for bids and proposals. .Represents the organization as a prime technical contact on contracts, projects or products. .Analyzes engineering plans and projects to conduct experimental tests, analyze proposals, and assesses related technical data to develop FAI&T alternatives. .Confers with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for required applications. .Develops and maintains plans, schedules and budgets for assigned projects. Prepares for periodic management reviews as required to give management visibility on the status and progress of assigned projects. .Prepares theoretical studies of involved technical subjects that find wide application to manufacturability problems or that are required where previous methods and techniques have not produced satisfactory results. .Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel. Consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk. .Prepares technical descriptions of basic designs, and engineering estimates for inclusion in bids and proposals or presentations to customers. .Responsibility for the manufacturing processes including development of total integrated manufacturing systems. .Prepares and coordinates entire Operations plans for the introduction of a product into production. .Performs difficult special assignments and provides technical direction to all Manufacturing personnel. Required Experience: B.S. degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research, with 12+ years work experience in electronics manufacturing, or an MS degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research, with 10+ years work experience, or a PhD, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research, with 8+ years work experience required. Technical expertise should include a broad background in the electro-mechanical manufacturing with a strong concentration in surface mount technology/processes for circuit card assembly in a NASA 8739/J-Std-001DS required. Demonstrated process expertise shall include: Component Lead Forming, Solder Paste Stencil Printing, Pick & Place, Vapor Phase Solder Reflow, Aqueous Cleaning Systems, and Automated Conformal Coating required Desired Skills: Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, US Citizenship required.
