Location and team
Our Electricity Transmission and Distribution (ETD) Group is seeking an electrical engineer with experience in protection and control for substations, transmission lines, distribution lines, and large industrial centers. The successful candidate will be based in the Raleigh, NC, or Fairfax, VA, offices.

Tasks may include

• Develop project strategies, architecture, and design specifics for protection and control systems.
• Projects may focus on all types of conventional relaying as well as new P&C approaches based on data communication links and local area networks.
• Contribute to developing system-wide protection standards for transmission and distribution station protection and control applications.
• Identify, recommend, and carry out training in P&C related subjects for clients and KEMA personnel.
• Applicants should be familiar with:
- Characteristics and use of old and new protective relay technologies.
- Relay application and setting for transmission and distribution systems.
- Substation control and related utility operating procedures.
- Distribution Automation (DA) design and related utility operating procedures.
- Protective relaying communications infrastructure.
- Data communications technology and applications for relays and substation control.
• Execution of power system studies, including management of project tasks, staffing, budget, and schedule.
• Evaluation of equipment needs for electric power transmission and distribution systems.
• Writing complete deliverable documents (formal reports, letter reports, white papers, articles, technical papers, and proposals).

What we're asking

• An advanced electrical engineering degree.
• 15 years experience in electrical T&D relay protection systems, relay manufacturing, or relay protection and control consulting.
• Experience in the application, setting, and testing of SEL relays, GE digital relays, Basler relays, or equivalent.
• Power systems concepts experience like power flow, short circuit, system stability, and reliability.
• Experience determining settings for transformers, buses, distribution feeders, capacitor banks, reactor banks, and transmission lines.
• Experience performing CT sizing calculations and connections.
• Experience creating relay database files and programming relays.
• Experience using one or more of the following software packages: CAPE, Aspen OneLiner, ETAP, EasyPower, CYMN, SKM.
• A broad concept of system reliability, asset management, and smart grid with a diverse background in electric power systems.
• Experience related to asset management, equipment health, equipment health monitoring, aging infrastructure, and risk analysis.
• Experience with electric utility and/or manufacturer organizations.
• Experience with Capital and O & M budget development and spending programs.
• Project management methods experience, including scheduling, cost control, risk and change-order management, scope control, budget control, quality control, project staffing, and status reporting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities and work in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Willingness to participate in business development activities, with strong client interaction skills.
• Willingness to travel more than 75% of the time.
• Strong skills in preparing and presenting company capabilities, project status reports, project proposals, and representing a company as the client's go-to engineering service provider.
• Active participation in the IEEE PSRC a plus.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license a plus.
