Position Purpose: Navistar Inc. - Leading diesel engine solutions for businesses and industries around the world. Navistar Engine Group, an operating division of Navistar, Inc., designs, engineers and currently manufactures the world's best-selling mid-range diesel engines under its global MaxxForceTM brand. Built for performance, reliability, durability and fuel economy, MaxxForce engines power on-highway commercial vehicles, off-highway commercial vehicles, on-highway consumer pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles and industrial equipment around the world. We are extending our product line to include 11L and 13L Big Bore engines. TheProject Engineer, Powertrain Integration,is a professional, technical position responsible for directing the development and integration of vendor designed powertrain electronic control modules into all Navistar vehicle applications. This person will be responsible for directing Navistar’s suppliers in the support of product development programs. Thorough understanding of electronics product development and product assurance techniques for automotive applications is required. This person will also be responsible for integration of powertrain systems into new applications. Candidates must possess an understanding of automotive powertrain functionality, interactions, and acceptable failure mode responses. The primary duties of this position include the following activities: * Develop functional design requirement documentation for vendor electronic control modules. * Provide suggested design alternatives that reduce product cost, and improve system robustness. * Evaluate supplier test plans for completeness. * Participate in supplier conducted testing when necessary. * Suggest methods and provide technical support for vehicle manufacturing end of line configuration and diagnostics of powertrain electronic control modules. * Direct integration of powertrain systems into the existing vehicle architecture and provide technical support to the department that performs the design of the vehicle electrical wiring systems. * Provide manufacturing support for the introduction of new control units and resolving any build issues. * Interface with customers to identify and develop new electronics features and functionality. * Maintain ‘build rules’ associated with electronic features contained within the various electronic control modules in support of sales and manufacturing. * Direct supplier warranty improvement activities. Perform sustaining engineering duties. In addition, is responsible for creating tasks and charts, managing programs, projects, and presentations and training the less senior engineers. Will also become involved and be responsible for customer relations with vendors, dealers, and customers. Works with minimum supervision within parameters established by supervisor, may provide task direction to technicians and others assigned with minimal direction and routine reporting.
Basic Requirements: * B.S. Technical degree with 5 years Engineering experience; OR M.S. with thesis in core competency; OR Ph.D. in general area of core competency without experience.
Additional Requirements: * Experience developing, designing, integrating, and/or testing automotive or similar electronic/electrical systems. * Experience designing, developing integrating, and/or validating automotive or similar electronic control systems and modules. * Thorough understanding of automotive powertrain system functionality, interactions, and acceptable failure mode responses. * Ability to travel up to 30% time. * Positive Attitude, Ethics, and International Values which support our company's values and a healthy, high performance culture. Desired Skills: * Thorough understanding of medium/heavy duty truck industry standard serial data link protocols (SAE J1939, SAE J1587, SAE J2284). * Extensive experience with using PC based service tools for troubleshooting electrical/electronic control systems. * Experience using vehicle network analysis tools. * Experience in systems design engineering. * Experience in applying product quality tools and techniques. * Experience in powertrain calibration. * Experience with reviewing and providing technical input for design concepts of vehicle electronic control systems and modules. * In particular, experience with verification test procedures related to analyzing the influence of environmental, mechanical, and electrical extreme conditions on the performance and reliability of electronic control modules. * Experience with embedded electronic manufacturing processes and techniques. * Commercial driver’s license. * Computer utilization skills (i.e. Word, Excel, Project). * Good communication skills. * Ability to coordinate project assignments independently. * Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
