Job Description The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will work as part of a team to develop new products, from concept generation through systems integration and verification through test. The successful candiate will primarily be involved with the design, development, implementation, and testing of mechanical systems, including ruggedized packaging of electronics systems for military applications, mechanical systems integration, and electro-mechanical systems design. Responsibilities will include assistance in scoping, planning, scheduling, and estimating the cost of development and test projects, in addition to execution of the design, development, integration and testing activities. The successful candidate will assist the business unit in the research and development of new concepts to address new markets and new technologies, having the ability to develop and apply advanced engineering concepts, theories and research techniques in the solution of complex technical problems.
Prior experience working with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), particularly on ground segment elements such as ground control stations, launcher subsystems, recovery subsystems, and ground data terminals with steerable, directional antennas is highly desired.
Responsible to create design concepts and take projects from concept to design. The successful candidate must be able to design both complex and simple structures and machines, electrical equipment packaging, and machine components and devices using solid modeling software. An essential ingredient is the ability to handle project responsibility: design, supplier management, machine-building supervision, testing and installation. This position will interface with project and systems engineers, other mechanical and electrical design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and design technicians in a team environment and provides technical consultation to customers and staff as required. Providing input to the proposal process is also required, working with project managers to establish job estimates. Estimate at Completion (EAC) and Estimate to Completion (ETC) estimates will required for all assigned jobs, as well as tracking of cost efficiencies.
BS (Required) or MS (Desirable) in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of achieving objectives within project scope, schedule and budget constraints and will be proactive, innovative, creative and self-motivated. Team oriented, with strong communication skills. Multi-functional experience/background with strong technical and problem solving skills. Well organized, effectively documents work, with high proficiency in written and oral communications, process driven. Ability and desire to work in a hands-on capacity/environment is a plus.
6-8 years experience in mechanical/electro-mechanical systems design and/or electronics packaging for military products. Experience in developing and managing complex systems that employ structural/mechanical subsystems, electro-mechanical subsystems, and electronic, fluid, thermal control subsystems. Product and test equipment hardware design, development and verification also required. Candidate will also possess a keen understanding of mechanical design principles and techniques, and ability to recognize mechanical, electrical or system abnormalities.
Experience/expertise employing CAD and analysis tools to develop, analyze, and document designs is a must. Solid Edge and/or Pro-E proficiency preferred. Conduct engineering calculations and solve problems during development through to system implementation, integration, and test. Should also be skilled in the application of test methods.
