Mechanical Engineering Consultant
Title: Mechanical Engineering Consultant Location: Delaware-WILMINGTON DuPont is a global company with ~60,000 employees around the world. Corporate headquarters are in Wilmington, DE, with corporate Research & Development facilities and Engineering offices and laboratories located at several Wilmington area sites. DuPont Engineering supports capital projects, conducts applied research that develops products and processes, and supports manufacturing assets as expert consultants. Within DuPont Engineering, there are approximately 500 engineers, scientists, and technicians working in DuPont Engineering Research and Technology (DuET). The DuET team collaborates to leverage engineering technologies to enable revenue growth by transforming R&D discovery into commercial products and to increase the productivity of manufacturing assets. Core competencies range from process control to rotating machinery to particle technology. DuET's Particle Technology group consists of about 30 people, including consultants, principal investigators (PI), and technicians, in areas such as crystallization, solid-liquid separation, characterization and interface science, gas cleaning, milling and size reduction, and solids handling. The Particle Technology group is seeking a Consultant/PI in the field of solids handling and dry solids processing.
The Particle Technology group within DuET has an opening for an engineering consultant whose primary focus areas will be bulk solids handling. The successful candidate will also be required to work in related competencies such as dry grinding, classifying, gas/solid separation, dust explosion protection, coating and dry mixing. The individual must have demonstrated project management and excellent communication skills in writing, speaking (including telephone consultation) and formal presentations. This role will support programs spanning several of DuPont's market segments, such as bulk chemicals, agriculture and nutrition and industrial biotech. The position focuses on technology support as opposed to pure research and requires the flexibility to work with a very diverse group of people with widely varying technical backgrounds and individual skill levels. Networking with external academic and supplier resources will be expected. The successful applicant will also demonstrate technical curiosity and a strong desire to learn.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative multi-disciplinary team working on a variety of programs supporting top-line growth and asset effectiveness improvement. The emphasis will be on applied particle technology in integrated unit operations. Program work ranges from fundamental science to short-term business-specific consulting applications. Work on fundamentals is generally aimed at enhancing the competency in testing, data evaluation, and process equipment design.
The consultant will collaborate to develop complete engineered solutions to technical challenges and will often coordinate and participate in laboratory and pilot scale work. The consultant will present their solutions to colleagues and other DuPont operations and business staff by communicating the technical, safety and financial implications of each alternative. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization. She or he must have the ability to advocate their technology in a balanced way that ensures appropriate utilization of their skills and a contribution to corporate profitability and core values. A demonstrated capability to balance multiple projects and to deliver high quality technical results in a practical manner is required.
