We utilize the latest commercial technology and apply it to the unique applications that exist on navy ships. About Area:Newburyport is located at the mouth of the Merrimack River, in the far northeast corner of Massachusetts. It is 35 miles north of Boston and 18 miles south of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Newburyport is a draw to tourists and ocean lovers alike. Outdoor activities include strolling along the active harbor, boating, swimming, fishing, and bird watching. Plum Island offers miles of public sandy beaches, and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 800 species of birds, plants and animals. Newburyport also boasts some of the best restaurants in the area and great shopping. Job Responsibility:The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a team development environment. Specifically this would require working closely with internal engineering, customer service and manufacturing organizations. This person must have knowledge of precision mechanical design and drafting techniques. Experience in electro-mechanical design and electronic packaging. Background in the design of automated systems, mechanisms, electro-mechanical subsystems, electronic packaging and servo controlled mechanical components.
This position's duties and responsibilities are as follows:
1. Mechanical design of new products in compliance with appropriate schedules and product specifications.
2. Mechanical engineering support of designers and drafters. Perform thermal and stress analysis, materials studies, tolerance studies and miscellaneous support as required.
3. Provide engineering support to manufacturing by resolving product and process related manufacturing problems.
4. Perform cost reduction and analysis on new and existing products and implement changes in a timely manner when directed.
5. Lead one or more designers in a teaming arrangement to ensure product quality, meeting assignment objectives, team supervision, and design direction.
6. Provide cost estimates, product information, mechanical engineering and general assistance.
7. Keep up to date with new products and processes by attending seminars and courses, visiting vendors and customer facilities, Technical reading and lectures.
8. Record and maintain files properly documenting activities in compliance with existing departmental procedures.
9. Mentor mechanical engineers and mechanical designers. Job Requirements:Background, education and experience required:
1. BSME required, MSME Preferred.
2. Minimum of 7 years experience in mechanical engineering and design.
3. A minimum of 4 years experience in the design of equipment for reliable operation in severe environmental conditions (MIL-S-901, MIL-STD-167, MIL-STD-810, EMI, temperature, corrosion and weather) is required.
4. Experience testing equipment to the above listed environmental conditions.
5. Experience with US Navy shipboard equipment specifications and engineering analysis is required. (PC based desirable)
6. Familiarity with the US Navy shipboard environment required.
7. Professional Engineering License is a plus.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
1. Proficiency in the use of personal computers.
2. Experience in the use of PC based CAD tools (specifically Autodesk Inventor and Mechanical Desktop)
3. Experience in the use of FEA & CFD software packages to analyze and asses shock, vibration, and thermal survivability.
4. Direct experience with machine shop, sheet metal fabrication, foundry operations, PCB build up, wiring and assembly required.
5. Transition from design to fabrication experience.
6. Familiarity with job shop environment.
7. Understanding of how interfacing engineering disciplines function (e.g. electrical design, software, test, etc.). Salary Range:Open
