Mechanical Design Engineer
Pratt & Whitney, a recognized leading producer of the world's most advanced jet engines, is looking for dedicated individuals to become a part of our organization. If you would like to work in an dynamic environment and possess the motivation to incorporate new ideas into practice, this may be the opportunity you've been waiting for!
This is your chance to join a company steeped in history yet focused on the future by developing engines that provide step-change improvements for the next generation of commercial aircraft and fifth generation fighters. Pratt & Whitney, a pioneer in flight and technology, is part of the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) family. UTC is a Fortune 50 company located in over 4,800 locations in approximately 80 countries with $54 billion in revenues (2010).
Pratt & Whitney Cold Section Engineering seeks a motivated, detail-oriented mechanical design engineer to join the externals design team. Working on inter-disciplinary teams, the selected candidates will perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, electrical and air management plumbing and harness systems hardware. This position requires creative design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements. Externals hardware includes a vast and challenging array of parts including tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, and component mounts. The Externals designer routinely interfaces with virtually every module on a PW gas turbine engine.
All design work will utilize Unigraphics solid modeling as well as in-house modeling and analysis tools. Opportunities are available on both military and commercial programs including the Geared Turbofan engine being developed for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet, as well as the F135 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter.
Key job functions:
-Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.
-Understand technical processes and design requirements of gas turbine externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets and electrical harnesses.
-Learn and apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.
-Utilize standard work, QCPC, and other ACE tools to continuously improve the externals design process.
-Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc).
Candidates must be US Citizen or permanent resident alien.
United Technologies Corporation is An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
Minimum two years mechanical design experience required. Experience with computer solid modeling (i.e. Unigraphics) and finite element analysis tools (i.e. Ansys or PATRAN) preferred. Candidate should possess proven communication and teaming skills. Candidate must be able to interface effectively with both internal and external customers. Prior PW gas turbine experience and strong aptitude in working in a virtual 3D environment is a plus.
