Mechanical Design Engineer - Ceramic Matrix Composites
Pratt & Whitney, a recognized leading producer of the world's most advanced jet engines, is looking for dedicated individuals to become a part of our organization. If you would like to work in an dynamic environment and possess the motivation to incorporate new ideas into practice, this may be the opportunity you've been waiting for!
This is your chance to join a company steeped in history yet focused on the future by developing engines that provide step-change improvements for the next generation of commercial aircraft and fifth generation fighters. Pratt & Whitney, a pioneer in flight and technology, is part of the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) family. UTC is a Fortune 50 company located in over 4,800 locations in approximately 80 countries with $54 billion in revenues (2010).
Pratt & Whitney's Hot Section Engineering group is seeking a talented and dedicated Mechanical Design Engineer with composites design experience and the creativity, drive, and desire to see their ideas become a reality. The successful candidate will be part of a growing team leading the design and development of composite hardware to meet the ever increasing performance demands of future military and commercial aircraft jet engines.
Specifically, the successful candidate is an advanced composites design engineer capable of developing 3D NX models from conceptual ideas, using the various aero/mechanical formats used by Engineering for design, analysis, manufacturing, and product definition of turbine airfoils. Specific experience generating cooled high pressure and shrouded low pressure CMC turbine airfoils is desired.
Use of Vistagy's FiberSIM for generating 2D flat patterns and experience in generating smooth transitions and creating 3D shuffled ply shapes using the NX GRIP software is highly desirable, as is the demonstrated capability to develop multiple software utilities for streamlining composite blade designs.
Knowledge of manufacturing techniques for generating hollow CMC airfoils (blades and nozzles) and experience with combustor liners and fuel nozzle heat shields would be a plus.
The individual will work as part of an Integrated Product Team to create and implement designs that meet engine-specific requirements. Activities include: Material selection; determination of laminate architecture; creation of solid models; design of sub-element components for structural testing; evaluation of manufacturing methods; assisting in manufacturing process development at suppliers; and ensuring the manufacturability of component designs that meet performance, weight and cost targets.
US Citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien Status required. DOD security clearance is desired.
Regional relocation only.
United Technologies Corporation is An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
A minimum of 8+ years of relevant experience working with advanced composites in the aerospace or gas turbine industries with a demonstrated track record of success.
Demonstrated capability to work with small and large teams, combined with strong writing, verbal, and presentation skills is also required.
