** THIS IS A PART-TIME ON-CALL POSITION**
Business area deals with the design, modification, integration, testing and certification of surveillance and communication technologies onto manned, special mission commercial-derivative aircraft. The candidate will maintain an active involvement in every step throughout the lifecycle of the modification, integration and airworthiness certification process once a project is initiated.
The Structural Engineer shall perform a variety of engineering work including aircraft structural design and analysis of repairs, modifications and integration of surveillance and communication technologies including antennae, radars, cameras, workstations, equipment racks and avionics. Involved in the creation of conceptual and detailed designs for permanent structural provisions required to integrate mission subsystems and sensors. Additional responsibilities may include writing detailed structural substantiation reports for aircraft modifications and other technical reports required to obtain FAA Field and STC approvals. Also involves reviewing and checking engineering drawings, plans, computations, estimates and reports for completeness, accuracy, and soundness.
Basic Qualifications: Typical Minimum Education / Experience: 14 Years with Bachelors in Science; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD.
Preferred Qualifications: •Knowledge of FAA 14 CFR Part 23 & Part 25 aircraft certifications requirements and the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) process.
•Ability to identify load paths, select materials and preliminarily size structures and fasteners.
•Possess an understanding of standard engineering drawing conventions.
•Possess the ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly to a fast-paced work environment.
•Ability and experience in creating engineering detail, assembly, and installation drawings using SolidWorks CAD software.
•Ability and experience in performing structural analysis via classical hand calculations and NASTRAN/PATRAN FEA on frames, stringers, skins, joints, splices, lugs, clips, fittings, etc.
•Prior design and analysis experience in solid laminate and sandwich composite structures (E-Glass, graphite, cores) for aircraft fairings and radomes.
•Familiarity in generating combined aerodynamic plus inertial loads for externally mounted aircraft modifications.
•Coordination experience with FAA DARs and DERs for any necessary assistance and/or approvals.
•Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and familiarity with documents needed to routinely maintain commercial aircraft: Structural Repair Manual (SRM), Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC), etc.
