Department DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary purposes of this position are to provide data retrieval and analysis services in support of Engineering, Mechanical, and Operations research when said research requires processing of large data files. This position provides Track Geometry data from TGC databases as back up Tasks information for derailment investigation, rail and tie deterioration studies, and analysis of other large data sources. This position also provides service for TR&D derailment investigation seminars with computer graphics and document preparation support. Much of this position's work is directed toward supporting TR&D research efforts such as: Rail wear rate analysis. . Tasks include collecting and processing thousands of rail profiles from the TGC database; retrieval of track usage data and train characteristics; event recorder and CAD signal data analysis; analysis of rail replacement records. Top of Rail (TOR) test data analysis. . Tasks include identifying trends between TOR system placement and vehicle lateral curving performance; analyzing lateral force data versus system dispensing rates; balancing these factors with cost of friction modifier dispensed; areas where current wayside friction control systems can be applied to minimize rail wear. Truck performance detector (TPD) system database mining. . Tasks include developing methods to review large quantities (millions of records) to quantify freight car curving performance trends; developing procedures to identify freight cars that are performing in an undesirable manner based on statistical means. Differential wheel wear research. . Tasks include study of TPD databases and Mechanical repair histories; linking these two data sources to search for commonalities that can lead to proactive maintenance strategies regarding wheel wear. Train operations research support. . Tasks include analyzing train movement records and CAD signal data; construction of track files for train operations simulation; event recorder analysis; organizing the "Reroad" analysis software index; verifying grade data from Track Geometry Car database. Environmental research support. . Tasks include calculating fuel burn within the state of California using train movement and event recorder data analysis techniques; determining emissions levels using similar techniques. This position will also be responsible for supporting TR&D project management system and other research efforts within TR&D when large scale projects require extra manpower to complete. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: . Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, or math field, or equivalent experience required. . 4 to 5 years experience working with Engineering, Track Geometry, and Mechanical department databases.
