Department DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: JOB DESCRIPTION The primary purposes of this position are to prepare samples for detailed analysis, and to design and conduct Tasks tests at the Physical Test Laboratory utilizing computer aided design/drafting systems, sophisticated machining tools, such as computer controlled abrasive water jet cutting machine, and laboratory test equipment, such as universal tensile and compressive force testing machines and servo-hydraulic cyclic load test machines. Much of this position's work is directed toward supporting TR&D research efforts. Tasks include: . Preparing samples, using precision machining and grinding equipment, in support of failure analysis, new material approval, and metallurgical research. . Developing and performing tests to evaluate suitability of new product designs or materials used by the Operating, Mechanical and Engineering departments. . Developing and performing Quality Assurance tests on materials currently used by Operating, Mechanical, and Engineering departments. . Design and construction of test equipment, jigs, and fixtures in support of Mechanical, Engineering and Operations analytical services. . Design, build, and conduct certification tests for lifting devices. . Conduct proof tests on load banding materials per the Mechanical Department load banding certification program. . Participate in the design, planning, and execution of over the road tests involving the TR&D Research & Test Cars. . On limited basis, conduct analyses on materials and equipment involved in personal injury cases, provide expert testimony in legal venues. . On limited basis, conduct analyses on component failures, reporting results to Strategic Sourcing and user departments, supporting cost recovery warranty claim efforts. . Conduct derailment investigation and investigation training to insure BNSF can properly determine root causes of derailments to meet federal accident reporting guidelines, perform trend analyses, and formulate effective remediation actions. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: . Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent work experience required. . Minimum 4 to 5 years experience in sample preparation experience for metallurgical analysis (e.g., Charpy impact specimen, 505 tensile specimens, etc.). . Minimum 4 to 5 years experience in Computer Aided Design/Drafting with skills necessary to conceptualize, design, and perform engineering anlaysis on complex jigs and fixtures. . Minimum 6 to 8 years experience in building or modifying complex jigs and fixtures, including welding and operation of machine shop equipment. . Minimum 4 to 5 years experience operating and maintaining universal tensile and compression load test machines and servo-hydraulic cyclic load test machines. . Must possess strong analytical skills to develop solutions to complex engineering problems. . Must possess and be able to apply management and interpersonal t be able to communicate technical information in a clear, concise, and understandable manner, verbally and in writing. . Must have excellent personal organization, planning, and time management skills. Knowledge requirements include: . Material science and understanding of how different materials perform together in specific environments; . Metallurgical knowledge of a wide variety of steels and steel alloys, and their mechanical and chemical properties; Requirements . Forensic techniques and skills, for application to failure analysis, derailment investigation, accident reconstruction, evidence interpretation, and technical interviewing; . Design theory behind railroad rolling stock and be able to understand how key vehicle characteristics affect dynamic performance; . Railroad vehicle dynamics. . Knowledge of Maintenance of Way, Mechanical and Transportation team operations and equipment. . Must be knowledgeable of the FRA, AAR, AREMA, and internal BNSF regulations governing each discipline.
