COINS Systems Integration Engineer
Categories: Engineering, Physical Sciences, Science/Biotech Technicians

Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute (BNNI) serves as the institutional home for Berkeley?s efforts in this interdisciplinary field of research, bringing together over 100 faculty from 12 departments within the Colleges of Chemistry, Engineering, Letters and Sciences, and the Goldman School of Public Policy, with colleagues at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and external industrial and government partners.

BNNI is home to the Center of Integrated Nanomechanical Systems (COINS), a Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) funded by a ~$12M cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. The Systems Integration Engineer, a hands-on position, is responsible for developing and implementing the roadmap for the successful development of COINS technology into fully integrated systems for specific applications.

In conjunction with the Executive Committee, s/he will develop detailed specifications for each of the component technologies and the integrated system for specific applications.

The SIE will plan, organize, and perform the work with COINS faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to combine the technology components into functioning system(s), including designing and assembling hardware and writing firmware/software. This will include efforts, both independent and with the COINS Executive Director, to facilitate the appropriate interconnections among the different thrust areas of the Center by interacting with participants and collaborators at UCB and at other participating institutions (Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology, and UC Merced).
