Associate Microbiologist
Identifies, isolates and studies microorganisms and their byproducts as it relates to the manufacturing and sterilization of medical devices. Practice microbiological techniques, including gram stain, media preparation, streak plating, and microbial identification methods. Will work with operations and research groups to monitor processes and support continuous quality improvement initiatives. Occasional 2nd and or 3rd shift work will be required.
• Perform environmental monitoring within controlled environments and test water for microbiological contamination. • Conduct endotoxin and bioburden evaluation of medical implants. • Support new product development activities. • Participate in the execution of, development of and/or improvement of sterilization processes. • Review sterilization process and equipment validation/qualifications (IQ, OQ & PQ). • Be a point of contact for suppliers for new process development, quality issues and process improvements for assigned projects. • Support product transfers to other plants/facilities. • Participate in continuous (breakthrough) improvement activity and process re-engineering projects in support of Stryker Orthopaedics Business Process Excellence initiative. • Act with integrity and mentor others.
Qualifications/Work Experience
• 0-2 years of device or pharmaceutical microbiological or biological testing, research and development, or sterility assurance experience. • Demonstrated knowledge in microbiological techniques; including gram stain, media preparation, streak plating, and microbial identification methods. • Prefer knowledge of environmental isolates, especially pathogens. • Demonstrated knowledge about a variety of microbiological concepts, practices, and procedures. • Demonstrated creativity and good judgment. • Ability to work cross-functionally with Product Development, Operations and Marketing. • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal communication skills • Must be a team player, and an advocate for product excellence and quality. • Must be results oriented, a quick learner, and able to respond to the urgent needs of the team ensuring all deadlines are met.
Education and/or Special Training
B.S. in Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related life science
