The ideal candidate will live or be open to relocating to the Davis, CA area.
This position will oversee the new research facility and manage daily field operations of alfalfa and silage corn breeding programs at Davis, CA. The station manager will be responsible for greenhouse management, field site selection, land preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation and weed/rodent control of nurseries and yield trials at the station and at local research fields. In addition, the selected individual will direct greenhouse pollinations and will be responsible for the planning and execution of yield trials for the semi-dormant alfalfa breeding program. Required (Basic) Experience & Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Breeding or related field. Five years of research experience; applied experience in agronomy, small-plot field research and greenhouse management; technical skills and experience in basic field equipment operation, maintenance and repair; proficiency in Excel or other data collection software; ability to obtain CA pesticide applicator license. Required Competencies & Other Skills: Able to execute projects with multiple priorities and timelines; able to prioritize and plan to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness; effective hiring, training and supervision of part-time crews and interns; timely response to field or personnel management needs; attention to detail; accurate and detailed record-keeping and reporting; excellent verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills; planning, organization and time management skills; leadership potential; proficiency in Excel and PRISM, Agrobase or similar database software. Preferred Experience & Education: Experience in seed industry, forage yield testing, research station management and local agronomic practices is strongly preferred. Preferred Competencies & Other Skills: Proficiency in speaking Spanish would be helpful. Our preference is for a candidate to live within 20 miles of the research station who can respond quickly to station needs (e.g. building security, environmental controls in greenhouse, field irrigation) outside normal work hours.
